Welcome Week at Liberty: A Freshman's Perspective

Hello everyone! As most of you probably know, I've been at college ever since Thursday. Since so many of you have been pestering me for a blog entry (*cough cough*), here it is, written as a daily account of my adventures here at Liberty University.

Thursday, August 20: On the way to Lynchburg!
Observations: AC about 32 degrees. Road seems to be a combination of a rollercoaster and a washboard; not as much roadkill out as there was when I came down here for CFAW.
Later:
I got everything unpacked and put away this afternoon. It only took a few hours, although I must admit, there turned out to be so many snacks, they filled up an entire bottom drawer under the bed (yes, I have drawers under my bed. I also have a microwave under there.) I don't anticipate starving in the near future!
There was a hall meeting on my floor for all the new freshmen. It started around 10:30, and if you know me, you know I'm not a night person at all. It was fun, even though I was half asleep most of the time, except for a certain game, that is. For the game, you put an Alkaseltzer tablet in your mouth and a big gulp of soda, and whoever kept it in the longest won. I won the first round, but two other girls in the other group kept it in for like five minutes, so a triple tie among the three of us was announced. My tongue certainly felt like it was going to fall out after that though.

Friday, August 21
Today was the day of all the freshmen orientations. Actually, there was only one I had to go to, and then I went to a Meet and Greet of the academic professors. I met my parents and sister at the Thomas-Reber dining hall (also known as the "ROT" -sort of makes one question the quality of the food served there).
Tonight was lots of fun. All my new hallmates and I went to the Welcome Rally for freshmen. I was deep in conversation when I realized we were all stopping at the end of this random line around the Welcome Center, and nobody seemed to know why we were waiting in line. That line, it turned out, ended at the football stadium, a 5 or 10 minute walk from the Welcome Center. Nobody knew exactly what we were waiting for, but as we finally drew closer, it appeared as though we had been waiting all that time for high-fives. Yes, high-fives. But then we got free Flames T-shirts for the Liberty sports teams, and food! (yup, that's why I really wanted to go to the rally)
The drum band banged out a drum piece for the crowd, who applauded. Then they pounded out another piece, and we applauded again. After some more drum hitting and some more clapping, I was beginning to wonder if this was a Welcome Rally or drum practice when someone got up to give a speech whose topic I forget. As my eyes began to wander across the field, they settled on what appeared to be a very large canon. I noted with some concern that the canon seemed to be pointed at our section of the audience. Suddenly, there was an explosion, and rolled-up T-shirts began raining down on the crowd, and I realized that by some strange coincidence, the canon was firing out T-shirts. I must admit, that's the first time I've ever heard of a T-shirt canon.

Saturday, August 22
I went to David's Place this afternoon, where they have an outdoor pool. It was so great, because it was really hot out, and after I'd swam around some, I managed somehow to fall asleep in the sun. I'm sure I must be walking several miles each day, going to all this fun stuff on campus. Also, the elevator in my building has been broken, so I've been walking up 6 flights of stairs whenever I want something from my room!

I hope you've enjoyed this post about my first week at Liberty University, because there will be more coming soon! (and if you didn't enjoy it, there's gonna be more anyway!)
