How to Sew a Pillowcase

Hello, lovely crafters! Today, I want to share with you a simple design for making your own pillowcase. I love making pillowcases because they're pretty simple to make, and they make thoughtful gifts for loved ones....or look beautiful on your own bed! If you can sew, you can make one of these pillowcases.

You will need:
1 yd 44" wide fabric in whatever color or print you like
Sewing machine
Sewing notations, like pins, thread, and scissors

Here's what to do:
1. If you haven't done so already, measure and cut off one yard of your 44" wide fabric. With the wrong sides (the unprinted sides) facing each other, pin the fabric down the long edge and across one of the short ends, leaving the other short end open. Sew a 1/4" seam along the pinned edges. You will end up with a "bag" that is closed on three edges and open on the fourth.

2. Turn the "bag" inside out (so now the right sides are together) and pin along the same seam you just sewed. This time, sew along the pinned area using a seam slightly wider than 1/4". You have just sewn a French seam, which is stronger than a regular seam, and a lot less likely to fray with repeated washings and use. I also think it looks nicer, especially if you're giving this as a gift!

3. The next part is a little tricky. At the opening of the pillowcase, turn down the raw edge 1/4" and then fold it down 3". Pin it like this all the way around, measuring it each time you pin, to make sure it's exactly 3" all the way around. Take your time with this step, as it's important in making your pillowcase look its best!

4. Finish pinning and sewing the hem, and iron all the seams. You have just made  your very own pillowcase!

You can make pillowcases from nearly any fabric you can think of. They make great gifts for friends and family members, especially if you pick a special print.
